Clinical Triggers

  • Objective: To increase the knowledge and comfort level of nursing staff with the aspects of clinical triggers, why we need them and how to identify them

College of Nursing: An Introduction to Organ Donation

  • Objective: To provide student nurses with a base knowledge regarding organ donation
  • Target Audience: Junior- and senior-level student nurses
  • Length: One hour

Critical Minutes: Organ Donation in the Emergency Department

  • Objective: Understanding the need for organ donation, clinical triggers and the importance of aggressive donor management
  • Target Audience: ED staff
  • Length: 30 minutes to one hour

Designated Requestor Training

  • Objective: To certify staff as designated requestors. As designated requestors staff will be fully trained to approach, discussion and serve as a resource to families and loved ones that need to make a decision regarding the questions of organ, tissue and eye donation. 
  • Target Audience: Physicians, nurses, spiritual services and social workers
  • Length: 3.5 hours
  • Recertification: Designated Requestors must originally complete a 3-1/2-hour training session lead by UW Organ and Tissue Donation. Thereafter, on an annual basis, all certified designated requestors must successfully complete an online re-certification exam. UW Organ and Tissue Donation maintains a database of all designated requestors within our designated service area. On a monthly basis we will contact all designated requestors who are due to complete their re-certification exam within the following month. Donation after Cardiac Death

  • Objective Spotlighting the uniqueness of DCD cases: focused on supporting the family of the donor through the process of withdrawing care. Including how to educate family regarding the process, prepping the OR/ICU space for the withdrawal as well as the development of a plan of care for patients who do not expire within the two (2) hour window for organ donation.

  • Objective: The Legislation Behind Donation, Donation 101, Critical Need for Physician Champions as well as the development of a presentation specific to the interests of the target audience.

History and Physiology of Brain Death

  • Objective: An in-depth look at the diagnosis, management and process of brain death and how it relates to organ donation.
  • Target Audience: Physicians, nurses, spiritual services, social workers

How do I fit in? The Position of OR Staff within Organ Donation

  • Objective: To increase the comfort level of the OR staff with regards to their expectations when a DCD as well as brain death cases move to the recovery phase.
  • Target Audience: OR staff
  • Length: 30 minutes to one hour

New Nurse Orientation: Your Role Within Organ Donation

  • Objective: To provide new nurses with a base knowledge regarding UW Organ and Tissue Donation and organ donation.
  • Target Audience: Nurses newly hired by the organization
  • Length: 15 minutes to one hour

Organ Donation: Beyond the ICU

  • Objective: General overview of organ donation, clinical triggers and the donation process.
  • Target Audience: Palliative care and general medicine staff
  • Length: 30 minutes to one hour

Physician Training

  • Objective: To enhance general knowledge regarding organ donation as well as to focus on specific medical management for organ donors and explore the role of the physicians, PAs and NPs with regards to organ donation. 
  • Target Audience: Physicians, PAs and NPs
  • Length: 30 minutes to one hour 

Supporting Organ Donor Families

  • Objective: How spiritual services/social work can serve as a resource during an organ donation case for donor families, hospital staff and UW Organ and Tissue Donation staff.
  • Target Audience: Spiritual services and social work staff that work in or cover the ED, ICU or CCU
  • Length: One hour  

Transitions: Caring for a Patient to Caring for a Donor

  • Objective: Understanding the need for organ donation, clinical triggers and the importance of aggressive donor management.
  • Target Audience: Staff who work in or float to ventilated units
  • Length: 30 minutes to one hour
