UW Hospital and Clinics Unveils Distinguished Magnet Obelisk and Plaque
MADISON - On Monday, August 24, a group of UW Hospital and Clinics nurses, senior administrators and other staff gathered at the Clinics Entrance for another important event in UW Hospital and Clinics' Magnet journey - the formal unveiling of a crystal Magnet obelisk and plaque, awarded by the Magnet Recognition Program® for nursing excellence.
The obelisk and plaque were unveiled by Maureen McCausland, DNSc, RN, FAAN, UW Hospital and Clinics senior vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer, and Donna Katen-Bahensky, UW Hospital and Clinics president and CEO.
"Since we received the Magnet designation on May 18, we've had time to reflect on what this recognition truly means to everyone who cares for patients," said Dr. McCausland. "At the end of the day, it's what we do for patients and families that makes a huge difference."

McCausland took a few minutes to express her extreme gratitude to colleagues who were instrumental in the Magnet journey, namely Dianne Danis, MS, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, director of nursing practice innovation, and Sue Berns, MSN, RN, nursing program specialist. She also thanked all other staff who were involved.
"It truly took a village to achieve Magnet," said McCausland. "We wouldn't be where we are today without everyone who contributed."
Katen-Bahensky also spoke of the rigorous process and commented on what a significant investment it was for UW Hospital and Clinics.
"Receiving Magnet Designation reinforced what we always knew," said Katen-Bahensky. "That UW Hospital and Clinics has an outstanding nursing practice environment, exemplary nursing leadership and superior nurses. Our patients and families truly receive the finest care."
Katen-Bahensky commended McCausland for her steadfast leadership and vision, and went on to read an excerpt from the letter she wrote to the American Nurses Credentialing Center commission, as part of the Magnet application:
"UW Hospital and Clinics nurses provide outstanding clinical care and superior patient/family service and have the respect of our physicians, residents and non-nursing staff.
"Magnet Recognition is an extremely powerful way to recognize UW Hospital and Clinics professional nurses' contributions to excellent patient care."
McCausland invites all staff to stop by the awards cabinet in the Clinics Entrance to view the impressive Magnet obelisk and plaque.
