UW Hospital and Clinics Human Resources VP Receives Honor Roll Designation
Madison, Wisconsin - Janice K. Bultema, senior vice president, human resources, University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, has been named one of Human Resource Executive® magazine's four Honor Roll award recipients for 2012. The award is part of the magazine's yearly recognition of top executives who have made outstanding contributions to their organizations and who exemplify the increasingly strategic role of HR in today's business environment.
"It's truly an honor to be named among this year's top HR executives," says Bultema. "While this award means a great deal to me, it certainly is a credit to the entire leadership team of UW Hospital and Clinics for their full support of our employees and employee programs, and to our talented HR team whom I have the pleasure of working with so closely."
Bultema joined UW Hospital and Clinics in 2003. Her "thumbprint" can be found on a wide array of projects and programs, including an academy aimed at providing non-clinical and electronic health-record education and introducing a "School at Work" program geared toward improving the skills of entry-level employees. She was also instrumental in developing and implementing a hospital-wide communication plan and other strategies to support employees and managers during the enactment of legislative changes related to collective bargaining and benefits.
"I'm thrilled that Jan is receiving this well-deserved recognition," says Donna Katen-Bahensky, UW Hospital and Clinics President and CEO. "Under her leadership, UW Hospital and Clinics has made strides each year toward becoming and remaining a workplace of choice. We have received national recognition for programs she has helped champion, such as scholarships and back-up care for our employees. She has played an essential role in building our robust employee wellness and organizational learning and development programs. UW Hospital and Clinics employees have access to a stronger portfolio of work-related benefits and work-life balance options because of Jan's leadership."
Prior to joining UW Hospital and Clinics, Bultema served as a Director of Nursing, Executive Director of Transition Planning and then Director of Human Resources at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. In addition, she held a number of positions at Duke University Medical Center, including Assistant to the Director of Nursing.
Bultema is a published author and frequent presenter on topics ranging from leadership to human resource management. She serves as a trustee and past chair on the Madison Area Technical College District Board, trustee and chair-elect of the Workforce Development Board of South Central Wisconsin and past chair of both the Health Care Workforce Alliance of South Central and Southwestern Wisconsin and University HealthSystem Consortium's Human Resource Officer Council. She is also a member of the Wisconsin Hospital Association's Council on Workforce Development. Bultema received her MSN in nursing services administration from Duke University, BSN from University of North Carolina-Greensboro and registered nursing diploma from Mercy Central School of Nursing.
Now in its 24th year, Human Resource Executive recognizes HR executives who have demonstrated excellence in their profession. A panel of judges selects one HR Executive of the Year and up to four individuals to the national HR Honor Roll. Selection criteria includes: the candidate's ability to handle significant problems or obstacles in the human resource field, the candidate's role and success in establishing the human resource function as an integral part of his or her organization, the candidate's management skills as demonstrated within the human resource function, and the nominee's contributions to the HR profession as a whole.
Bultema, along with the four other award winners recognized by the magazine, will be honored on October 9 during a special awards dinner sponsored at the University Club of Chicago.
