UW Health pharmacistMadison, Wisconsin - UW Health Pharmacy Services has entered into an agreement with Access Community Health Centers to provide pharmacy services at Access clinics beginning next year.

According to Steve Rough, director of pharmacy at UW Hospital and Clinics, UW Health will provide on-site comprehensive pharmacy services at the William T. Evjue and Wingra Family Medical Center clinics beginning in April. UW Health Pharmacy Services will be available at the Joyce & Marshall Erdman clinic later in 2014.

Rough said UW Health pharmacists strive to connect with patients and families individually and personally and engage them as partners in decisions about their care.

“Our goal is to provide low-cost and convenient quality care from pharmacists trained in patient education, drug therapy management and appropriate use of medications,” said Rough.  “We know that access to affordable medications with advice from expert pharmacists improves patient outcomes and reduces hospitalizations and emergency room visits.

“As we expand our pharmacy to include multiple sites with mail service and medication therapy management provided by UW Health pharmacists, this collaboration gives us the expertise to continue our high level of service while continuing to offer affordable medications for our patients,” said Access Community Health Centers CEO Dr. Ken Loving.

Access pharmacists and staff members have been offered their current positions as UW Health employees.  UW Health will hire additional staff to serve all Access pharmacy sites.

Through this partnership Access will continue to make low-cost drugs available to patients. In addition, Access patients will be able to take advantage of UW Health interpreter services and medication assistance programs.

Access Community Health Centers is a non-profit, charitable organization specializing in quality health care that has worked to remove barriers to care since 1982. Access provides affordable and comprehensive primary medical and dental care, behavioral health and pharmacy services to more than 25,000 patients. The only federally-qualified community health center in Dane and surrounding counties, Access offers services at five locations.
