UW Health 2009 Annual Report: A Message from Our CEOs
Each of our organizations has always been charged with and devoted to excellence in patient care, research, education and community service. As we focused on those crucial elements, we recognized their common underlying aim: advancing the health of the residents of Wisconsin and beyond.

Our new mission statement begins with this bedrock purpose. Then in four simple concepts — service, scholarship, science, and social responsibility — it captures the essential elements that have been the hallmark of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and UW Health.
The stories in this book represent these four elements. They illustrate both sophisticated patient care and the integrated population health emphasis that makes us unique among the nation's academic health centers. They describe our response to pressing issues of the day, such as the looming crisis in primary care and the shortage of physicians in many disciplines.
Touching on both clinical and basic science research, they point the way to new knowledge and therapeutic directions. If we think of each day as the cusp of time between past and future, each moment assumes enormous potential.
We are proud of our heritage and honored to add to it every day. As we move into the next five years of growth and challenge, nothing could be more grounding than our historic mission to advance health.
