SAUK CITY, Wis. - Unity Health Insurance, along with the Wisconsin Pharmacy Quality Collaborative (WPQC), were recently awarded one of four 2010 Rx Benefit Innovation Awards from the Pharmacy Benefit Management Institute (PBMI) at its annual Drug Benefit Conference on February 18.

Unity Health Insurance and WPQC received the award for developing a pharmacy quality pay-for-performance program by working with community pharmacies, health plans and health care purchasers to improve the quality of medication use and patient safety as well as decrease costs for patients and health plans.

"This award recognizes the importance of providing quality care and we are pleased to share the award with WPQC," said Patrick Cory, PharmD, Unity Health Insurance's pharmacy program director.

To participate in the program, pharmacies must implement changes within their practice to meet the 12 "best practice" quality-based requirements. Those that meet the requirements are eligible for reimbursement for providing professional services to members such as one-on-one medical device teaching, proactive assistance in switching to low-copayment medications, education on the importance of taking medications as prescribed and medication therapy management.

"WPQC's approach is unique in the industry and an important step in reforming the health care payment system to reward quality," said Dana H. Felthouse, MBA, president of the Pharmacy Benefit Management Institute.

"Unity is honored to receive this award in conjunction with WPQC," said Terry Bolz, president and CEO of Unity Health Insurance. "We are committed to continuously improving the quality of care provided to our members and our involvement with this program is another example of this commitment."
