Recycle Your Car Seat with Safe Kids Coalition on May 7

Child in car seatMadison, Wisconsin - The Safe Kids Madison Area Coalition of American Family Children's Hospital is joining with AAA Wisconsin and Kohl's Department Stores to get rid of unsafe child-safety seats.

Seats more than 6 years old, purchased in a garage sale or thrift store, or involved in a car crash will be collected between 9am and noon Saturday, May 7 at Kohl's Department Stores at West Towne and East Towne Malls.

The plastic will be removed from the seats and recycled.

A number of incentives will be available to those who bring in seats, including 15 percent discount coupons to Kohl's.

"It is important to make sure your child is traveling in a safe car seat," says Nicole Vesely, Safe Kids Coalition coordinator. "If the seat is expired, it is unsafe to use and may not hold up in a crash. The plastic stresses and warps, the straps tend to fray or rip, and the important instructional labels fade or may fall off all together."

Vesely says seats bought secondhand may also be dangerous for children who occupy them.

"If you purchased the seat from a garage sale, thrift store or other source in which you don't know its history, it is also unsafe because if it was in a crash, its frame may be compromised," she says. "We are still seeing so many seats in all of these categories and decided to hold an event to get them out of circulation."
