Kids Rule: Free Movies for Children's Hospital Patients
MADISON – A large maroon-colored dog and a life-size neon sign were prowling the lobby of American Family Children's Hospital June 16 to spread the word on a special promotion by Marcus Theaters and American Family Insurance.
Clifford the Big Red Dog and Stubby, the Marcus Theaters mascot, greeted patients and families during the kickoff of Kids Rule, in which current and former patients at the hospital receive free tickets to family-friendly movies at Madison's two Marcus Theater locations: Point and Eastgate Cinemas.
The films will be shown Wednesdays and Thursdays for eight weeks starting June 23-24 at 10am. Free tickets will also be available at the offices of participating American Family Insurance agents. Non-ticket holders will pay $2.75, and all attendees receive free popcorn.
"This is incredibly generous," said Jeff Poltawsky, executive vice president of American Family Children's Hospital. "This really brightens the children's day to see some familiar celebrities along with getting free movie theater tickets. Our job is to get kids healthy so they can go back to being kids again, and that's what this is all about."
Tom Reichelt, general manager of Marcus Theaters, Madison, said they were fortunate to find some great family-friendly movies to put on this year's schedule.
"All the films are complete blockbusters and a great treat for families," he said. "I like to call it escapism. No matter what's happening or the ills you may have, you get to be away from reality for a bit, just release everything and have fun for two hours."
This year's movies include:
- June 23-24: "How to Train Your Dragon"
- June 30-July 1: "Percy Jackson and the Olympians/The Lightning Thief"
- July 7-8: "The Tooth Fairy"
- July 14-15: "Diary of a Wimpy Kid"
- July 21-22: "Furry Vengeance"
Movies for July 28-29, Aug. 4-5 and Aug. 11-12 are yet to be determined.
