Donor Family Gives to UW Health Organ Procurement Organization
Hailey Rath's heart now beats in a young teen from Michigan, but her spirit is the very pulse of this corner of the world.
Hailey, who was an organ donor at age 13 following a car accident, is the force behind an annual event that brings awareness to organ donation and raises funds to promote donation awareness across Wisconsin. This year's event, held August 23 at The Rock, included a walk/run, four local bands, food and family fun.
On Dec. 12 the Rath family, who were amazed to learn that Hailey's organ and tissue donations saved and improved the lives of more than 70 people, presented a check for $15,000 to Trey Schwab, outreach coordinator for the UW Health Organ Procurement Organization.
Schwab, who is also a double-lung transplant recipient, oversees the UW Health Donor Education Fund and understands the importance of events like Hailey's.
"Hailey's event clearly demonstrates the dedication that the Raths and other people from this area have for keeping organ donation education and promotion in the spotlight," said Schwab. "It's been three years since Hailey left us, but she continues to make a big difference, especially to the people who are still waiting for a transplant."
In addition to the UW Health OPO, checks were presented to Lutherdale Bible Camp and five Beloit area churches.
In 2009, Hailey's event will be held on August 22.
