MADISON – Most nine-year-olds want toys for their birthday. Alexis Polkinghorn from Argyle, Wis. wanted something different. She wanted to raise money for American Family Children's Hospital and thought her birthday was the perfect way to do it. "I was watching a show [on television] and they went to the Children's Hospital and I saw the sick kids," Polkinghorn said. "I told my mom I wanted to raise money for the hospital."
Erin Polkinghorn, Alexis's mom, was surprised but happy that her little girl wanted to do this. "She's never done anything like this before, but it's wonderful," she commented.
With her mom's help, Alexis decided to have a birthday party and ask the guests to bring monetary gifts for American Family Children's Hospital. When asked what her friends thought of the idea, Alexis replied, "They thought it was cool."
Thanks to the generosity of her birthday party attendees, Alexis raised $300.
"I'd like it to be used for toys for kids," she commented.
With her gift in hand, Alexis, her mom and grandmother toured American Family Children's with Jeff Poltawsky, vice president of the hospital, and Kylee Carolfi-Malik, special events coordinator.
"[Alexis] is an inspiration and a very special little girl," said Poltawsky. "We're grateful that she thought so generously of others. She joins an amazing group of children whose philanthropic spirit has benefited American Family Children's Hospital."
When asked her favorite part of the tour, Alexis replied, "The movie theater and the seat that looks like a car." The Pierce Family Theater is a replica of an old-fashioned movie theater where patients and families can watch movies or DVDs, and there is a bench that looks like the back of a 1957 Chevy in front of the theater.
The money that Alexis raised will go towards the Child Life Fund, which is used to purchase toys, books and games for patients at American Family Children's.
Youth philanthropy has raised approximately $50,000 this year from 70 different groups and individuals. Among the many different ways kids can raise money is the Peter Pan Birthday Club. Just as Alexis did, kids ask for monetary contributions in lieu of gifts. The Peter Pan Charitable Fund matches the gift with an additional $100. This year 10 kids have participated in the Peter Pan Birthday Club.
Alexis is glad she decided to help raise money for the hospital. "It feels really good," she said with a smile.
