Art Zoobilee to Benefit American Family Children's Hospital

Art Zoobilee artist painting a large frogMADISON -The Henry Vilas Zoo will be home to a few new animals this summer - 34 fiberglass animals to be exact.

The animals are a part of Art Zoobilee, a public art display and auction which will raise funds for both the American Family Children's Hospital and the Henry Vilas Zoo.

Friends of UW Hospital and Clinics and the Friends of the Zoo have partnered to create this new event.

The brightly colored animals will be on display at the zoo from Saturday through September 26. Each fiberglass animal, from turtles to an eight-foot-tall giraffe, has a sponsor.

"We started out by sending a 'call to artists' out last summer, asking them to send in designs," said Annie Bockhop, UW Health community relations coordinator. "We ended up receiving more than 150 designs."

The sponsors then chose an animal and design to support. The animals will be auctioned on October 22 at the Marriott Madison West. In addition to the 34 animals being sponsored, there will be 30 smaller animals that will be painted and put on display at local retail locations, and part of the October 22 auction.

All the proceeds will be split between Friends of UW Hospital and Clinics and the Friends of the Zoo.

"It is wonderful to bring two of Madison's greatest resources together for this wonderful project," adds Bockhop. "The art is absolutely beautiful, and it all supports two very worthy causes."

The Zoo is open to the public seven days a week, 9:30am-5pm.
