UW Hospital One of Top 100 Companies for Working Parents

UW Hospital and Clinics Working Mother award: Mother with two childrenMadison, Wisconsin - UW Hospital and Clinics has been named one of the top 100 employers for working parents by Working Mother magazine, the only publication dedicated to working parents.

 

This is the seventh year in a row UW Hospital and Clinics has received this honor, and we are one of five hospitals in the nation to make the list.

 

Other honored hospitals this year are:

  • Baptist Health South Florida
  • Bon Secours Virginia
  • Children's Healthcare of Atlanta
  • Northwestern Memorial HealthCare (Chicago)

Earlier this year UW Hospital and Clinics introduced a new benefit providing one week of paid leave following the birth or adoption of a child.

 

"This new benefit supplements the generous sick, vacation, holiday and income-continuation insurance benefit employees currently use while on leave of absence," said senior vice president, Human Resources, Janice Bultema.

 

The hospital also recently formed the 50 Star Council, a group of 50 non-represented employees who meet monthly with administrators and other stakeholders to discuss how to improve the workplace and health care environment for patients and families.

 

Topics may include everything from budgetary matters to employee benefit programs to hospital construction projects.

 

Later this year, the hospital will pilot a new offering called College Coach, which offers help to employees who want to return to school to improve their chances for advancement, or have questions on how to finance their children's education or help them select the right school.

 

"In addition, employees and their children can seek individual and personalized telephonic counseling sessions with a seasoned college admissions counselor to help answer specific questions they might have," said Kristin Kunz, program director of human resources.

 

"UW Hospital and Clinics is committed to providing market-competitive benefits and family-friendly programs that help our employees balance their personal and professional lives," Bultema said. "We believe this enables our dedicated and talented employees to provide excellent care for our patients and their families."

 

In the past, Working Mother magazine has applauded the hospital for its back-up care program, which allows parents to get at-home care for mildly-ill children or elderly adults, and the school-at-work program for employees who want to take college classes on company time to improve their chances for promotion.

 

For four years in a row, Working Mother has also named the hospital as one of 12 best companies in the nation for benefits and programs that assist hourly workers.
