Skin Punch Biopsy
The Muscle and Nerve Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison, Wisconsin, provides skin punch biopsies.
Specimens are routinely paraformaldehyde fixed, cryoprotected and frozen for cryosectioning. Immunohistochemistry staining with neuronal marker PGP 9.5 is performed on 50 micron frozen sections. Epidermal nerve fiber density analysis from each biopsy site is performed to determine the possible diagnosis of small fiber neuropathy.
