Punch Skin Biopsy
UW Hospital and Clinics Laboratory Services provides punch skin biopsies.
Specimens are routinely paraformaldehyde fixed, cryoprotected and frozen for cryosectioning. Immunohistochemistry staining with neuronal marker PGP 9.5 is performed on 50 micron frozen sections. Epidermal nerve fiber density analysis from each biopsy site is performed to determine the possible diagnosis of small fiber neuropathy.
