Gretchen is a nurse practitioner in the Department of Surgery employed by the University of Wisconsin Medical Foundation:

Gretcen Beverstein, Nurse Practitioner, UW Medical Foundation"As a nurse practitioner, my role is both in the clinic and inpatient settings. In the clinic, I perform all of the preoperative history and physical examinations for all surgical patients. I also have my own clinic several days per week, where I see postoperative patients, acute issues, routine annual clinic appointments, and any other issues.

"In the Hospital, I manage patients' post-operative course and I am involved in the discharge process of patients, as well. I do lots of public speaking at educational seminars, both at UW Hospital and Clinics and in the community. This fall I will be teaching a course to undergraduate nursing students at the University of Wisconsin Madison School of Nursing.

"I love connecting with people, solving problems, and establishing good relationships with my coworkers and my patients. I love working at an institution with students and residents that places a high value on education and learning.

"I am very fortunate that I have a job that challenges me, and enables me to be in a leadership role with potential to grow. I am driven by my passion to help control the obesity epidemic, since it is such a devastating and rapidly growing problem."
