UW Hospital and Clinics Philosophy of Nursing

 

Nurses at UW Hospital and Clinics deliver patient- and family-centered care through professional nursing practice that is compassionate, respectful, accountable and nonjudgmental.

 

We strive to humanize health care and acknowledge the holism of mind, body and spirit. We recognize, and try to mitigate, the vulnerability associated with illness, while creating a peaceful environment conducive to healing.

 

Professional nurses in each department, unit, clinic and program are responsible for providing safe, timely and fiscally responsible care.

 

 

By adopting the primary nursing model, UW Hospital and Clinics demonstrates how fully it values and promotes continuity of the relationship between specific nurses and their patients.

 

Nurses provide around-the-clock care for hospitalized patients, and appropriate care throughout the episode of illness for patients in ambulatory and home care settings. Nurses coordinate care in response to patient conditions, services and settings over time.

 

 

We are committed to continuous quality improvement, and incorporate performance and outcome measurements at the unit, department and organizational level. We contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession in a manner that is congruent with UW Hospital and Clinics’ mission and values.

 

The ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses (2001) provides a framework for ethical decision-making for all nurses at the UW Hospital and Clinics.
