Jeune Skin Care Aestheticians
woman's face; Jeune Skin Care Ask the Experts: How can I get rid of brown spots on my face? - Jeune Skin Care, Madison, WisconsinQ. I see so many brown spots on my face, especially after summer. How can I get rid of them?

A. You are most likely referring to hyperpigmentation. This is a common, usually harmless condition in which patches of skin become darker in color than the normal surrounding skin. This darkening occurs when the brown pigment that produces skin color, melanin, forms deposits in the skin.

Age spots, freckles, and old acne scars can become darker or more pronounced when the skin is exposed to the sun. This happens because melanin absorbs the energy of the sun's UV rays in order to act as a protection from overexposure. The end result is a suntan. Unfortunately, the areas that are already dark get even darker. How frustrating!

There are, however, some treatments and prescriptions available to help. There are a few most popular topical products and treatments. Sometimes a combination therapy will give the best results.

Some forms of therapy include:
  • Hydroquinone
  • Kojic Acid
  • Retin A
  • Chemical peels
  • Light therapy

Hydroquinone and Kojic Acid lighten and fade the darkened areas by slowing the production of melanin. Over time, the skin gradually fades to the normal skin color.

Retin A and chemical peels rapidly exfoliate the damaged outer layers of skin to produce, new, healthy skin cells. Light therapy works by absorbing the pigment in the skin. The sun spots typically fade within 1-2 weeks after a natural shedding process.
