How to Wash Your Face
Cleansing your skin is one of the most important skin care steps you can take. It is especially important if you wish to have better texture, clarity and to experience long term health benefits for your skin.
Unless your skin is exposed to excessive pollutants or sweat, cleansing twice a day should be sufficient. However, cleansing your skin too often or aggressively can strip it of natural oils.
Proper cleansing will stimulate circulation and prepare the skin to receive other topically applied products, increasing their efficacy.
Cleansing the skin removes dead skin cells, dirt, oil, makeup and most importantly bacteria.
Choosing the right cleanser for you can be tricky yet is very important, especially if you are unclear about your specific needs. Many over the counter soaps, although convenient, can disrupt the natural lipids and proteins of the skin, causing dryness.
What is the Proper Way to Cleanse?
- Splash your skin with lukewarm water first. Cold water is not as effective in removing embedded oil and dirt.
- Apply the appropriate cleanser to your fingertips and gently massage the cleanser in a light, circular motion for about 60 seconds. This allows enough time for impurities to loosen and dissolve.
- Using a clean, wet washcloth, use the washcloth to gently remove all the cleanser. Be careful to not pull or drag the skin, especially near the eyes.
- Rinse and gently pat dry with a clean washcloth.
While cleansing the skin is a very important step, remember that another very important element for healthy skin is the products you use.
