Over the years, our face loses its youthful fullness due to decreasing collagen, elastic, and hyaluronic acid - the building blocks of vibrant, healthy skin. Fillers, also called dermal fillers or soft tissue augmentation, can replace lost volume in our face by temporarily "plumping up" the areas that have lost fullness.

Treating Signs of Aging

Signs of aging that can be treated by fillers include not only the "laugh lines" around the eyes and mouth, but also hollow cheeks, thin lips, and downturned mouths. In some cases, placement around the brow and eyelids can help lift a droopy brow, or fill out the appearance of dark, hollow eyes.

Numerous fillers are available to meet the wide range of cosmetic concerns. Many fillers, such as Restylane, Juvederm, or Radiesse, offer immediate results and minimal downtime. The options for fillers are constantly growing, and proper selection and placement of the filler are essential for optimal results.

Many times, fillers can also be combined with botulinum toxin for an even smoother effect, since botox works to block the creases that form when a facial expression is made, such as the "frown lines" between the eyebrows.

While fillers are considered safe, all medical procedures carry some risk. Minor bruising, swelling, small lumps, under-filled areas, and asymmetry may occur. It may be helpful to avoid blood-thinners, aspirin, ibuprofen, and vitamin E prior to the procedure to help minimize bruising.

How long do the results from fillers last?

Most fillers are temporary and require repeat treatments to maintain results. Depending on the type of filler used, results may last from 4 months to 1-2 years, and can be repeated when needed. Your physician can help guide you to the most appropriate filler depending on the depth of the wrinkles and lines, and the specific area of the face to be contoured.

As skin continues to age over time, the injection of fillers offers a great option to replenish the lost volume of our faces, and restore youthful facial contours.
