American Family Children's Hospital combines the friendliness of a small pediatric hospital with the advanced care and expertise of more than 50 pediatric specialists. It is known nationwide for treating children with diseases such as diabetes, cystic fibrosis, heart problems and cancer. The following nursing opportunities are available at American Family Children's Hospital:
School-Age and Adolescent Inpatient Unit and Pediatric Oncology
School-Age and Adolescent Inpatient Unit and Pediatric Oncology
Nurses on this unit care for children ages six to 18. The unit includes a 10-bed all-age pediatric hematology/oncology/immunology unit. Nurses care for children and adolescents requiring intervention for complex medical and surgical disorders including cystic fibrosis, orthopedic surgery, neurological disorders, childhood cancers, bone marrow transplantation, organ transplantation and the need for rehabilitation.
The nursing staff on this unit creates an environment that fosters opportunities for normal growth and development through school and daily recreation programs, open visitation for parents, siblings, relatives and friends and rooming-in for a family member who wants to stay overnight. Nurses facilitate active participation of patients and family members in treatment and care.
Pediatric Intensive Care
The Pediatric ICU offers challenging and rewarding nursing opportunities. Patients range from newborns to adolescents who have experienced major surgical procedures, head injuries, pulmonary diseases, cardiac anomalies and organ transplantation. Primary nurses, with a highly skilled and committed multidisciplinary team, provide family-centered care to critically ill or injured children.

Nurses care for children from birth to age five requiring intervention for a variety of complex medical and surgical problems, including organ transplantation, congenital anomalies, neurological disorders, pulmonary disorders and plastic and orthopedic procedures. The unit also cares for children of all ages after cardiac surgery. Nursing supports an active family role in patient care.
Nurses on this unit foster opportunities for normal growth and development through playroom activities, open visitation for parents, siblings, relatives and friends and rooming-in for a family member who wants to stay overnight.
