Level One Trauma Center Exposure
The Emergency Radiology Division at UW Hospital and Clinics provides state-of-the-art imaging services for one of the largest and busiest Level One Trauma Centers in southern Wisconsin.Emergency radiologists and radiology technologists are always on hand, day and night, to provide prompt care for many of the patients who come to the Emergency Department. The radiology teams are prepared for virtually any patient emergency, pediatric or adult, medical or traumatic, and are able to provide imaging services within one hour of arrival. In addition, radiological imaging plays an important role in the diagnosis of many other emergency medical problems, including appendicitis, diverticulosis, pulmonary embolism, kidney stones or stroke.
Computed tomography (CT) imaging is a valuable tool for the rapid assessment of traumatic injury to the chest, spine, pelvis, face and extremities. Three-dimensional images, which can be rotated and seen from all angles on a computer screen, are reconstructed from CT images with the aid of advanced computer programs by the 3D lab. These three-dimensional images are particularly valuable for the diagnosis of aortic aneurysms and for the assessment of facial, spine and pelvic fractures prior to surgery.
