Pancreatic Resections of the Tail
UW Health Liver and Pancreas Surgeons in Madison, Wisconsin are experts in the surgical management of pancreas disorders.
Pancreatic resections of the tail involve removing the left part of the pancreas and sometimes require removing the spleen as well. The blood vessels which supply the spleen run through the pancreas and depending on the location and type of the tumor, the spleen may need to be removed in addition.
Removing the left part of the pancreas does not require making any new connections. This procedure is performed for tumors of the pancreas, either known malignant tumors or those that may become malignant. This procedure can be performed in an open or a laparoscopic fashion.
