| Collection Instructions: |
|
Blood specimens- A lavendar-K3EDTA tube is preferred for CBC and Differential results. A lavendar-K2EDTA tube is acceptable. Two unstained smears should accompany the specimen.
Bone Marrow Specimens- CBC with Differential and reticulocyte count must be ordered in conjunction with bone marrow collection. Bone marrow specimens are collected by a physician at the bedside and coverslip smears are prepared by the laboratory technologist. If a bone marrow biopsy is collected it is put in a vial containing Z-5 fixative (note time the biopsy was put into the Z-5 on the vial and on the form).
Outreach- bone marrow aspirate specimens for morphologic assessment should be directly smeared onto clean coverslips/slides made from a non-anticoagulated bone marrow aspirate (allow to air dry). Extra bone marrow aspirate should be put into a heparin (green) top tube. Refer to the individual tests for collection instructions for non-morphologic tests (eg. cytogenetics, flow cytometry, molecular, etc).

| Outreach Specimen Transport: |
|
Transport specimens at ambient temperature. Put coverslip slides into a manilla coin envelope and label with two patient identifiers (name and birthdate), date and time of collection. Put envelope into a plastic container to protect the slides during transport. Put the bone marrow biopsy that is in Z-5 fixative in a biohazard bag and seal it. Do NOT put slides in the same bag as the Z-5 fixative. Put all the specimens and form into one larger bag and transport to UWHC ASAP.
