Specimen Requirements

Collection Container: Preferred: Green cap with yellow ring (PST)
Also Acceptable: Green top, Red cap with yellow ring (SST), Red top

Collection Volume: Preferred: 1.5 mL
Pediatrics: 1 mL

Sample Analyzed: Plasma or serum

Volume Required: Preferred: 0.5 mL
Pediatrics: 0.25 mL

Specimen Processing: Centrifuge. If a complete barrier has not been formed, transfer cell-free plasma or serum to plastic vial. Refrigerate.

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to laboratory. Transport with coolant pack if coming from UWHC Satellite lab location. If time from collection to receipt in the UWHC Core Laboratory will exceed 48 hours, freeze sample and ship frozen.

Unacceptable Criteria: Grossly hemolyzed samples are unacceptable.

Stability: Refrigerated: 48 hours separated off cells
Frozen: 6 months separated off cells

Supportive of bacterial pneumonia or other localized infection.


Supportive of a significant systemic bacterial infection.


Significant bacterial infection likely; patient is at increased risk for bacterial sepsis and/or septic shock.


Additional Information:

Repeat testing should only be performed >48 hours from first test.
