Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)

Collection Container: Preferred: Sterile screw cap container

Collection Volume: Preferred: 2 mL
Pediatrics: 1.5 mL

Sample Analyzed: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) aliquot

Volume Required: Preferred: 1 mL
Pediatrics: 0.5 mL

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Microbiology Laboratory (B4/231) immediately. If transport is greater than one hour, transport on coolant pack.

Unacceptable Criteria: LIMIT: One test per admission; non-sterile specimens or leaking containers.

Stability: Ambient: 1 hour
Refrigerated: 72 hours
Frozen: 3 months


Interpretation

Expected Results:

Negative

Test Limitations:

The results obtained should be used only as an adjunct to clinical observation with other information available.

 

Positive test results do not rule out other causes of meningitis including bacteria, mycobacteria, other viruses (eg. herpes family viruses, arbovirus, mumps virus, etc.) and fungi.

 

Negative test results do not rule out the presence of enterovirus.

 

Visible red blood cells (RBCs) in the CSF sample can result in an invalid test.
