Test Name: CGA- Tissue

Test Code(s): SLH831 / HCSLH831

Methodology: Cell culture, Giemsa/Trypsin/Leishman (GTL) banding

Clinical Significance: Used to determine fetal karyotype in miscarriage, fetal demise, and stillbirth.

Testing Site: Testing will be sent to an approved reference laboratory.

Days Performed: Mon-Sat.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 3 weeks.


Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Tissue

Collection Instructions: Aseptically collect a 0.3-1.0 cm cubed section of fetal tissue-tissue pale pink to red in color indicates an active blood supply.  Avoid pale tan to brown tissue as that indicates necrosis. Place specimen in sterile container with transport media. If multiple tissues are sent, please place placenta in separate vials from other tissue. For skin biopsies, clean area with alcohol not iodine or betadine.
Fetal tissue or placenta material must be received by WSLH within 24-48 hours of collection.

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220) at room temperature (may transport with coolant during hot, >85F, weather).

Unacceptable Criteria: Specimens processed with formalin.

Stability: Frozen: Not acceptable


Interpretation

By report.

Test Limitations:

Depending on the length of time a fetus has been deceased, the specimen may fail to grow under any circumstances.

Additional Information:

If only maternal decidua and no fetal material is identified in the specimen, the clinician will be contacted before the specimen is processed. If FISH testing or Array testing is requested to characterize chromosome abnormalitiies, there will be an additional charge.
