Test Name: JAK2 Mutation V617F Quantitative, PCR

Methodology: PCR

Clinical Significance: To detect JAK2 mutation V617F associated with myeloproliferative neoplasms. Aids in diagnosis of hematologic disorders and for monitoring disease after treatment or bone marrow transplant.

Testing Site: Testing will be sent to an approved reference laboratory.

Days Performed: Mon-Sat.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 3 - 5 days.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Bone marrow aspirate

Collection Instructions: The bone marrow must be received and processed by WSLH within 24 hours of collection.  Bone marrow must be received by the UWHC Core Laboratory Monday-Friday only.

Collection Container: Preferred: Lavender top

Collection Volume: Preferred: 1 mL
Pediatrics: 0.5 mL

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220) at room temperature (may transport with coolant during hot, >85 weather).

Unacceptable Criteria: Bone marrow that is clotted or frozen.

Stability: Ambient: 24 hours
Refrigerated: Not acceptable
Frozen: Not acceptable


Interpretation provided with results.

Test Limitations:

Failure to identify a mutant clone by Q-PCR does not rule out the presence of other abnormalities.
