Test Name: FISH- SYT (SS18) Gene Rearrangement

Methodology: Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH)

Clinical Significance: To detect rearrangements of the SYT (SS18) gene associated with synovial cell sarcoma.  Aids in diagnosis and for monitoring disease after treatment.

Testing Site: Testing will be sent to an approved reference laboratory.

Days Performed: Mon-Sat.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 3 - 5 days.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Tissue

Collection Instructions: Fresh tissue or paraffin embedded tissue is acceptable. Fresh tissue should be collected using aseptic procedures avoiding areas of necrosis. Place fresh tissue in sterile tissue vial containing tissue transport media. Vials are available from UWHC Surgical Pathology (608)263-8453. Fresh tissue must be received and processed by WSLH within 24 hours of collection. Specimen must be received in UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220) on Monday-Friday only.

Sample Analyzed: Tissue

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220) at room temperature. Transport with coolant pack during hot weather (>85F).

Stability: Ambient: 24 hours
Refrigerated: Not Acceptable
Frozen: Not Acceptable


Interpretation provided with results.

Test Limitations:

The translocation partner chromosome cannot be determined by this test.

Failure to identify an abnormal clone by FISH does not rule out the presence of other abnormalities in the specimen.


Additional Information:

If FISH assay is not performed in conjunction with chromosome analysis there is an additional charge for processing the specimen

synovial  sarcoma
