Methodology: Precipitation, Thin Layer Chromatography, Electrophoresis

Clinical Significance: Screening for mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS).

Testing Site: Testing will be sent to an approved reference laboratory.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 5 - 15 days.


Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Random urine

Collection Instructions: Early morning void is preferred.

Collection Container: Preferred: Sterile screw cap container

Collection Volume: Preferred: 15 mL
Pediatrics: 7 mL

Sample Analyzed: Urine aliquot

Volume Required: Preferred: 15 mL
Pediatrics: 3 mL

Specimen Processing: Do not spin.  Freeze sample immediately

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220).  Transport on dry ice if coming from outreach location.

Unacceptable Criteria: Not available on blood

Stability: Ambient: Not acceptable
Refrigerated: Not acceptable
Frozen: 1 year
