Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Bone marrow aspirate

Collection Instructions: Submit bone marrow aspirate or aliquot of bone marrow product in aerobic and anaerobic Bactec bottles. An aerobic bottle only may be submitted as anaerobic infection is rare.

Collection Container: Preferred: Bactec® Blood Culture Bottle

Collection Volume: Preferred: 6 mL

Sample Analyzed: Bone Marrow Aspirate

Volume Required: Preferred: 0.5 mL

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Microbiology Laboratory (B4/231).

Stability: Ambient: 2 days
Refrigerated: Not acceptable
Frozen: Not acceptable

Additional Information:

The method used detects aerobic and anaerobic bacteria as well as Candida and Cryptococcus.

 

Filamenteous Fungus blood cultures should be collected when Malassezia furfur or dimorphic fungi, e.g. Histoplasma capsulatum, are suspected.
