Test Name: Trichomonas Wet Prep

Methodology: Microscopy

Clinical Significance: Aids in the diagnosis of trichomoniasis. For vaginal specimens, also testing for yeast and bacterial vaginosis (gram stain) is highly recommended.

Days Performed: Daily.

Turnaround Time: Stat: 1 hour.
Routine: 8 hours.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen: See collection instructions.

Collection Instructions: Acceptable specimens include vaginal fluid, semen, male urethra, urine, prostatic secretions.

Collection Container: Preferred: CultureSwab®
Also Acceptable: Sterile screw cap container

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Microbiology (B4/231).

Stability: Ambient: 2 hours
Refrigerated: Not acceptable
Frozen: Not acceptable

Test Limitations:

Wet preps have low sensitivity (50%) for trichomonas.

Recommend Culture, Trichomonas which includes wet prep.
