Test Description: Test Component:

Yeast culture; smear if requested.


Methodology: Culture, Microscopy

Clinical Significance: Aids in the diagnosis of candidiasis.

Days Performed: Daily.

Turnaround Time: Routine: Smear/Stain: Calcofluor white stain 8 hours. Culture: Preliminary - report 24 hours. Culture: Final report - 48 hours.


Specimen Requirements

Specimen: See collection instructions.

Collection Instructions: Acceptable specimens include throat, oral cavity, buccal mucosa, catheter tips, esophogeal brushes, and urine.

Collection Container: Preferred: CultureSwab®
Also Acceptable: Sterile screw cap container

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Microbiology Laboratory (B4/231) within 2 hours of collection.

Stability: Ambient: 2 hours
Refrigerated: 24 hours
Frozen: Not acceptable


Interpretation

Expected Results:

No Yeast Isolated

Test Limitations:

Wet preps have low sensitivity (50%) for yeast.
