Test Description: Test Component:

Includes wet prep for Trichomonas vaginalis and clue cells; KOH prep or calcufluor white stain for yeast.

Methodology: Culture, Microscopy

Days Performed: Daily.

Turnaround Time: Stat: 1 hour.
Routine: 8 hours.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Vaginal swabs

Collection Container: Preferred: 2 CultureSwabs®

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to laboratory within 2 hours of collection.

Unacceptable Criteria: Specimens in transport greater than 8 hours will not be accepted.

Stability: Ambient: 2 hours
Refrigerated: Not acceptable
Frozen: Not acceptable


Expected Results:

Negative for Trichomonas

Negative for clue cells

Negative for yeast

Test Limitations:

Wet preps have low sensitivity (50%) for yeast and trichomonas and marginal specificity for bacterial vaginosis. The Vaginitis/Vaginosis Work-Up is the highly recommended alternative for the best sensitivity and specificity.
