Test Name: Helicobacter pylori Ag, Stool

Test Code(s): HPAGST / XHPAG

Clinical Significance: This test is approved for all ages but recommended testing method for patients under the age of 18.
H pylori Urea Breath Test is recommended for all patients over 18 years of age.

Testing Site: Testing will be sent to an approved reference laboratory.


Specimen Requirements

Patient Preparation: Test is contraindicated for patients that have taken antimicrobials, proton pump inhibitors, or bismuth preparation two weeks prior to collecting stool for the Enzyme Immunoassay for the detection of Helicobacter pylori Antigen in stool.  


Interpretation

Test Limitations:

Patients must be off these drug(s) for at least 2 weeks prior to testing: 

  • Antimicrobial agents (antibiotics) by oral, IV, or IM administration
  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) such as Prilosec®, Prevacid®, Nexium®, Protonix®, Aciphex®, or Zegerid®.
  • Bismuth preparations such as Pepto-Bismol®, Kaopectate®, or Helidac®.
