Test Name: Simian B Virus Serology


Methodology: Western Blot/ELISA

Clinical Significance: Test only availiable as part of biohazard exposure workup involving macaques monkeys.

Testing Site: Testing will be sent to an approved reference laboratory.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Blood

Collection Instructions: Special request form necessary.  Contact UWHC Test Referral office at (608)262-6388 to obtain form.

Collection Container: Preferred: Red top
Also Acceptable: Red cap with yellow ring (SST)

Collection Volume: Preferred: 9 mL

Sample Analyzed: Serum

Volume Required: Preferred: 2 mL

Specimen Processing: Centrifuge.  Transfer serum to sterile, screw cap plastic vial.  Freeze.

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220).  Transport with coolant pack if coming from outreach location.

Stability: Refrigerated: 1 week
Frozen: Indefinitely


Test Limitations:

Because testing is done using paired specimens, the failure to submit a baseline or follow-up serum specimen will result in insufficient specimens for complete testing, potentially resulting in unreliable diagnosis.
