Test Name: Microalbumin/Creatinine Ratio

Test Description: Test Component:

Microalbumin, urine creatinine and calculated ratio.  The microalbumin/creatinine ratio will also be calculated and reported if a random urine creatinine and random urine microalbumin are ordered on the same urine collection.

Days Performed: Daily, 24 hours.

Turnaround Time: Stat: 1 hour.
Routine: 4 hours.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Random urine

Patient Preparation: No vigorous exercise during 4 hours prior to collection.  Patients should not collect the urine specimen during menses, since blood in the sample may affect test results.

Collection Instructions: Collect in a urine container. No preservative necessary.  First morning void is preferred.  A blood-free specimen is preferred.

Collection Container: Preferred: Sterile screw cap container

Collection Volume: Preferred: Entire collection
Pediatrics: Entire collection

Sample Analyzed: Urine aliquot

Volume Required: Preferred: 1 mL
Pediatrics: 0.4 mL

Specimen Transport: After specimen collection is completed, transport entire specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220). Transport with coolant pack. If transport is delayed, keep specimen refrigerated.

Outreach Specimen Transport: Transport entire collection on coolant pack to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220).

Unacceptable Criteria: Collection container contaminated with preservative is not acceptable.

Stability: Refrigerated: 7 days
Frozen: Not acceptable


Reference Interval for Microalbumin/Creatinine Ratio:

24 months and up (male and female):  0-29 mg/g cret


Reference Interval for Microalbumin, urine: 2 years and up: 0-30 mg/L


Interpretive Guidelines:

   Microalbumin/Creatinine Ratio (Spot Urine)

 < 30   mg/g cret   


 30-299 mg/g cret   


 > 299 mg/g cret   

 Clinical albuminuria
