Specimen Requirements

| Collection Instructions: |
|
Buccal swabs are the preferred specimen type.
Buccal swabs: Swab area around Stensens's ducts (adjacent to the second upper molars), preferably within the first 5 days of illness. Place swab in viral M4 transport media.

| Specimen Transport: |
|
Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory. Transport with coolant pack if coming from outreach location.
|

|
|
|
| Unacceptable Criteria: |
|
Wooden swabs, such as calcium alginate, are not acceptable.

|
|
| Stability: |
|
Refrigerated: 48 hours
|

Interpretation
|
|

| Test Limitations: |
|
A negative result does not rule out infection with mumps virus.
