Methodology: PCR

Clinical Significance: Aid in the diagnosis of mumps.  Buccal swabs are the preferred specimen for testing.

Testing Site: Testing will be sent to an approved reference laboratory.

Days Performed: Mon-Fri.

Turnaround Time: Stat: Not available stat.
Routine: 1 - 3 days.


Specimen Requirements

Collection Instructions: Buccal swabs are the preferred specimen type.

Buccal swabs:  Swab area around Stensens's ducts (adjacent to the second upper molars), preferably within the first 5 days of illness.  Place swab in viral M4 transport media.

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory.  Transport with coolant pack if coming from outreach location.

Unacceptable Criteria: Wooden swabs, such as calcium alginate, are not acceptable.

Stability: Refrigerated: 48 hours


Interpretation

Test Limitations:

A negative result does not rule out infection with mumps virus.
