Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)

Collection Container: Preferred: Radiometer PICOŽ syringe
Also Acceptable: Green top, Numbered specimen tube from sterile disposable lumbar puncture tray, Red top, Sterile screw cap container

Collection Volume: Preferred: 1.5 mL
Pediatrics: 0.5 mL

Volume Required: Preferred: 1.5 mL
Pediatrics: 0.5 mL

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220) within 30 minutes of collection.

Unacceptable Criteria: Clotted specimens or specimens past stability time are not acceptable.

Stability: Ambient: 30 minutes
Refrigerated: 1 hour on ice slurry
Frozen: Not acceptable


Interpretation

0 days and up:  0.0-2.0 mmol/L

This test was performed using a modification of an FDA approved method.  The performance characteristics of this test were determined by the UWHC Clinical Laboratories and meet the standards for clinical testing.
