Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Breast cyst fluid

Collection Instructions: NOTE: Cyst aspirations do not require the assistance of the Fine Needle Aspiration Team.

Collect cyst aspirations per standard protocol. NOTE: For Cytology specimens ONLY, add the fresh sample to a pre-filled CytoLyt Specimen Collection Cup. DO NOT pour off ANY of the CytoLyt fluid prior to adding the sample.

Specimen Processing: Within 4 hours of collection, add up to 60 mL of cyst fluid to a pre-filled CytoLyt Specimen Collection Cup.  Tighten the lid securely. NOTE: DO NOT SEAL CONTAINER WITH PARAFILM WRAP.

Specimen Transport: Place specimen inside a biohazard bag with the request form in the outside pocket of the bag. Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220) within 1 hour of collection.

Outreach Specimen Transport: Place specimen inside a biohazard bag with the request form in the outside pocket of the bag. Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220). Avoid freezing.

Stability: Ambient: 4 hours fresh; 8 days in CytoLyt
Frozen: Not Acceptable

Test Limitations:

Abnormal findings must be correlated with history and other test results.

Additional Information:

Paperwork must include patient's name, medical record number, date of birth, specimen source, collection date, clinic and phone number, clinician's full name and pager number, and pertinent history.
