Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Bronchial, GI Tract, Peritoneal, Urinary Tract

Collection Instructions: For Biliary Tract Brushings on patients with a history of primary sclerosing cholangitis, refer to the "Biliary Tract Malignancy" test directory entry or search for "psc" in the test directory.

Hank's Balanced Salt Solution and 50 mL plastic centrifuge tubes may be picked up from the UWHC Cytology Lab. Please call (608) 263-3205 for supplies.
If Hank's solution is unavailable brushing specimen may also be submitted in isotonic saline solution.

Fill a centrifuge tube with 30 mL of Hank's Solution. Clip each brush into a separate Hanks tube. Label each Hanks tube with two patient identifiers and the collection site.
NOTE: The brush must remain completely submerged in the solution.

Specimen Transport: Place specimen inside a biohazard bag with the request form in the outside pocket of the bag. Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220) within 1 hour of collection.

Outreach Specimen Transport: Refrigerate specimen following collection. Transport with coolant pack; avoid freezing.

Unacceptable Criteria: A dry brush without Hank's solution. A brush submitted in formalin. Air dried or alcohol fixed slides.

Stability: Ambient: 4 hours
Refrigerated: 72 hours
Frozen: Not acceptable

Test Limitations:

Abnormal findings must be correlated with history and other test results.

Additional Information:

Paperwork must include patient's name, medical record number, date of birth, specimen source, collection date, clinic and phone number, clinician's full name and pager number, and pertinent clinical history.
