Test Name: Biliary Tract Malignancy

Test Code(s): BILMAL / HCBILMAL

Test Description: Link: http://www.mayomedicallaboratories.com/test-catalog/Specimen/84357

Clinical Significance: Intended for biliary brushings on patients with suspected or confirmed primary sclerosing cholangitis(PSC).

Brushing specimens from patients with PSC are inherently difficult to differentiate between benign and malignant conditions on cytology alone.  By combining cytology with molecular testing, the sensitivity for detecting malignancy is increased.

Testing Site: Testing will be sent to an approved reference laboratory.

Specimen Requirements

Collection Instructions: ThinPrep PreservCyt vials can be obtained through central services, UWH Item #4014040.

Clip bile duct brush directly into a ThinPrep PreservCyt solution vial. Tighten the vial cap so the torque line on the vial cap passes the torque line on the vial.

Specimen Transport: Place specimen inside a biohazard bag with the request form in the outside pocket of the bag. Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220).

Interpretation

Bile Duct, Primary Schlerosing Cholangitis, PSC, ERCP Cholangiocarcinoma
