Methodology: Enzymatic

Days Performed: Daily, 24 hours.

Turnaround Time: Stat: 1 hour.
Routine: 4 hours.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Blood

Patient Preparation: Patient should fast for 10-14 hours and be heparin free for 48 hours prior to specimen collection.  The patient can only have water, black coffee or calorie free drinks during the fasting period.

Collection Container: Preferred: Green cap with yellow ring (PST)
Also Acceptable: Green top, Red cap with yellow ring (SST), Red top

Collection Volume: Preferred: 1 mL
Pediatrics: 0.4 mL

Sample Analyzed: Plasma or serum

Volume Required: Preferred: 0.5 mL
Pediatrics: 0.2 mL

Specimen Processing: Centrifuge.  If a complete barrier has not formed, transfer cell-free plasma/serum to plastic vial.  Refrigerate.

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220). Transport with coolant pack if coming from outreach location.

Stability: Ambient: 24 hours
Refrigerated: 7 days
Frozen: 1 year


Interpretive Guidelines:

Age 0 days - 9 years:

Based on NHLBI Guidelines

 <75 mg/dL Acceptable
 75 - 99 mg/dL Borderline
 >99 mg/dL High

Age 10 years - 19 years:

Based on NHLBI Guidelines

 <90 mg/mdL Acceptable
 90 - 129 mg/dL Borderline
 >129 mg/dL High

Age 20 years and up

Based on NCEP ATP - III Guidelines

 <150 mg/dL Normal
 150 - 199 mg/dL Borderline High
 200 - 499 mg/dL High
>499 mg/dL Very High
