Test Name: HIV-2 Antibody Screen

Methodology: Enzyme Immunoassay

Clinical Significance: Antibody status to HIV-2.  This test is part of the confirmatory testing performed on reactive specimens for HIV-1/2 Ab.

Screening of a patient with epidemiologic risk factors for HIV-2. Such factors include:

    - persons from countries in which HIV-2 is endemic
    - sexual partners of such persons
    - persons who have received a blood transfusion or  
      nonsterile injection in an HIV-2 endemic country
    - persons who have shared needles with a person
      known to be HIV-2 infected
    - children of women who have risk factors for HIV-2
      infection or who are known to be infected with HIV-2
    - patients with an illness suggestive of HIV infection
      in which HIV-1 testing is negative or inconclusive.

Testing Site: Testing will be sent to an approved reference laboratory.

Days Performed: Mon, Wed.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 3 - 15 days.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Blood

Collection Container: Preferred: Red top
Also Acceptable: Green top, Green top and red cap with yellow ring (SST)

Collection Volume: Preferred: 4 mL
Pediatrics: 1 mL

Sample Analyzed: Serum or plasma

Volume Required: Preferred: 1 mL
Pediatrics: 0.25 mL

Specimen Processing: Centrifuge. Transfer cell free serum/plasma to plastic vial. Refrigerate.

Specimen Transport: Transport refrigerated specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220). Transport with coolant pack if coming from outreach location.  

Stability: Refrigerated: 7 days
Frozen: Indefinite

Test Limitations:

Does not determine presence of HIV virus. Test may be nonreactive for several weeks following exposure, or in final stages of AIDS.

Additional Information:

HIV-2 Western Blot performed if EIA is repeatedly reactive.
