Test Description: Test Component:

Quantitative total antibody IFA testing for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Murine Typhus.

Methodology: Indirect Fluorescent Antibody

Testing Site: Testing will be sent to an approved reference laboratory.

Days Performed: Once a week.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 2 - 6 days.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Blood

Collection Instructions: Routine blood draw. Acute and convalescent sera for diagnostic testing.

Collection Container: Preferred: Red top

Collection Volume: Preferred: 9 mL
Pediatrics: 3 mL

Sample Analyzed: Serum

Volume Required: Preferred: 3 mL
Pediatrics: 1 mL

Specimen Processing: Centrifuge. Transfer cell free serum to plastic vial. Refrigerate.

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220). Transport with coolant pack if coming from outreach location.


Interpretive Guidelines:

Diagnostically significant titer: 4-fold titer change with convalescent titer of greater than or equal to 1:128 or single serum titer greater than or equal to 1:256

Test Limitations:

Some cross reactivity between these two agents occurs in the lower dilutions.
