Test Description: Test Component:

RT-PCR assay for the detection of Norovirus genotype I and II RNA in stool samples.

Methodology: Reverse-Transcriptase PCR

Testing Site: Testing will be sent to an approved reference laboratory.

Days Performed: Tuesdays and Thursdays

Turnaround Time: Routine: 2 - 4 days.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Stool

Collection Instructions: Stool specimens should be collected within 72 hours of symptom onset.  Store at 2-8C.

Collection Container: Preferred: Sterile screw cap container

Collection Volume: Preferred: 2 mL
Pediatrics: 2 mL

Sample Analyzed: Stool

Volume Required: Preferred: 0.2 mL
Pediatrics: 0.2 mL

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220). Transport with coolant pack if coming from outreach location.

Stability: Refrigerated: 72 hours


Expected Results:

Norovirus RNA not detected.


Noroviruses may be detected in the stools of asymptomatic individuals. Some Norovirus types may not be detected with primers currently in use. Available patient information should be considered when interpreting test results. This PCR-based test should be considered an investigational tool.
