Test Name: Drug-Dependent Platelet Ab

Test Code(s): DDPLT / HCDDPLT

CPT Code(s): 86022 (1-3 drugs); each additional drug add 86022

Methodology: Flow Cytometry

Testing Site: Testing will be sent to an approved reference laboratory.

Days Performed: Twice a week-days vary.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 5 - 7 days.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Blood

Collection Instructions: Provide list of drugs to be tested.

Collection Container: Preferred: Red top
Also Acceptable: Light blue top (3.2% NaCitrate)

Collection Volume: Preferred: 9 mL
Pediatrics: 2 mL

Sample Analyzed: Serum or plasma

Volume Required: Preferred: 5 mL
Pediatrics: 1 mL

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220). Transport with coolant pack if coming from outreach location.

Stability: Ambient: Not acceptable
Refrigerated: 7 days
Frozen: 30 days


Expected Results:

No drug-dependent platelet antibodies detected.

Additional Information:

Positive test results are not absolutely diagnostic of drug-induced thrombocytopenia and must be used in combination with clinical information to make a diagnosis. Negative results do not completely rule out a diagnosis of drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia.
