Test Description: Test Components: Total Carnitine, Free Carnitine Carnitine, Free and Total (includes carnitine, esterified) esterified carnitine, Free & Total

Methodology: Tandem Mass Spectometry

Testing Site: Testing will be sent to an approved reference laboratory.

Days Performed: Mon-Fri.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 3 - 7 days.


Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Blood

Collection Container: Preferred: Green top (with sodium heparin anticoagulant)
Also Acceptable: Green top (with lithium heparin anticoagulant), Red top

Collection Volume: Preferred: 4 mL
Pediatrics: 3 mL

Sample Analyzed: Plasma

Volume Required: Preferred: 1 mL
Pediatrics: 1 mL

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to laboratory immediately. Specimen must arrive in the lab within 20 minutes of collection.

Outreach Specimen Transport: Spin immediately and freeze plasma. Transport frozen plasma to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220) on dry ice.

Stability: Ambient: Not acceptable
Refrigerated: 12 hours
Frozen: 1 month
