Test Name: CGA- Hematologic

Methodology: Cell culture, Giemsa/Trypsin/Leishman (GTL) banding

Clinical Significance: Aid in diagnosis of leukemia or pre-leukemic blood disorder. Aid in follow-up after treatment or bone-marrow transplant.

Testing Site: Testing will be sent to an approved reference laboratory.

Days Performed: Mon-Sat.

Turnaround Time: Stat: 3 - 4 days.
Routine: 6 - 7 days.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Blood

Collection Instructions: This blood must be received and processed by WSLH within 24 hours of collection.  Blood must be received by the UWHC Core Laboratory  Monday-Friday or before 0900 on Saturday.

Collection Container: Preferred: Green top (with sodium heparin anticoagulant)

Collection Volume: Preferred: 4 mL
Pediatrics: 1 - 2 mL

Sample Analyzed: Whole Blood

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220) at room temperature (may transport with coolant during hot, >85F weather).

Unacceptable Criteria: Whole blood that is clotted or frozen.  Blood collected in EDTA, sodium-citrate or anticoagulants other than sodium heparin. Plasma and serum are not acceptable.

Stability: Ambient: 24 hours
Refrigerated: 24 hours
Frozen: Not acceptable


Expected Results:

46, XX or 46 XY; Apparently normal karyotype, photograph of a representative karyotype included with report.

Test Limitations:

Quality and number of cells may be limited if specimen is not adequate.

Additional Information:

If additional banding is indicated, will perform C-banding or N-banding. If molecular studies with DNA probes are indicated, there will be a small additional charge. If initial results suggest clonal changes, additional cells will be evaluated.
