Test Name: B pertussis PCR

Test Code(s): BORPCR / BPPCR

CPT Code(s): 87798 x 3

Methodology: PCR

Clinical Significance: PCR assay for the detection of Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella parapertussis DNA in respiratory specimens.  Assay will also detect Bordetella holmsesii.

Testing Site: Testing will be sent to an approved reference laboratory.

Days Performed: Mon-Fri.

Turnaround Time: Routine: 1 - 2 days.


Specimen Requirements

Specimen: See collection instructions.

Collection Instructions: Obtain Pertussis collection kit from UWHC Core Lab, (608)263-7060.

Collect nasopharyngeal swabs or aspirates. Follow collection instructions that come with kit. Kit will contain swabs, Regan-Lowe medium for culture and sterile tube for PCR testing.

Collection Container: Preferred: Pertussis kit

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220).  


Interpretation

Expected Results:

No B. pertussis DNA detected.  No B. parapertussis DNA detected.

Test Limitations:

This test is not FDA approved and test results must be correlated with patient history to confirm as a case of B. pertussis or B. parapertussis.

Additional Information:

This test detects the presence of an insertion sequence, IS481. This sequence is also known to be present in Bordetella holmesii, an uncommon respiratory pathogen of humans.
