Test Name: Cell Count, Body Fluid

Test Description: Test Component:

Color, turbidity, nucleated cell count, red blood cell count and differential performed from a Wright's stained cytospin.


Methodology: Manual or Impedance Count

Days Performed: Daily, 24 hours.

Turnaround Time: Stat: Cell count 1 hour.
Routine: Differential less than 24 hours. Turnaround time met unless review by a pathologist is necessary.


Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Body fluid

Collection Instructions: Preferred Collection Container:  Sterile container.
For bloody specimens, a lavender top tube is recommended.
For synovial fluids, a capped syringe is acceptable (needle must be removed before submitting to lab).

Collection Container: Preferred: See collection instructions.

Collection Volume: Preferred: 9 mL
Pediatrics: 5 mL

Sample Analyzed: Body fluid aliquot

Volume Required: Preferred: 2 mL
Pediatrics: 1 mL

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220) immediately. Transport with coolant pack if coming from outreach location.

Unacceptable Criteria: Samples that are clotted are not acceptable.

Stability: Ambient: 8 hours
Refrigerated: 8 hours
Frozen: Not acceptable


Interpretation

On samples with abnormal cells, a hematopathologist's written interpretive report is issued as a separate report.

Test Limitations:

Very small sample sizes may fail to demonstrate abnormal cells.

Additional Information:

Differential results may not be available until after pathology review. A professional fee may be associated with this test.
