Test Code(s): BONE

CPT Code(s): Not available

Test Description: Test Component:

Bone marrow differential

Methodology: Manual

Clinical Significance: Histologic diagnosis of hematologic and other disorders; ancillary studies performed as appropriate.

Days Performed: Mon-Fri, dayshift by appointment only. Call 263-8044 before collection.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen: Bone marrow aspirate and biopsy

Collection Instructions: A CBC with Differential (includes platelet count) and reticulocyte count must be ordered in conjunction with bone marrow collection. Bone marrow samples are collected by a physician at the bedside and coverslip smears are prepared by the laboratory technologist.

Samples coming from outreach locations should be collected into balanced oxalate for morphologic assessment or directly smeared onto clean coverslips or slides from non-anticoagulated bone marrow (allowed to air dry - no fixatives, unstained). Collection in a lavendar (EDTA) tube is also acceptable. Refer to the individual tests for collection instructions for non-morphologic tests (eg. cytogenetics, flow cytometry, etc).

Sample Analyzed: Wright stained bone marrow aspirate coverslips

Specimen Transport: Transport specimen to UWHC Core Laboratory (B4/220) as soon as possible.

Stability: Ambient: Unfixed slides are stable for 7 days

Interpretation

A hematopathologist's written interpretive report is issued as a separate report.

Additional Information: A professional fee is associated with this test.
